Geocaching Events: What to Expect at Your First MEGA
If you’ve been geocaching for a while, you’ve probably seen people talk about “MEGA” events. But what exactly makes them so special, and why do geocachers travel from all over the world to attend?
A MEGA event is a geocaching gathering that brings together 500+ attendees, officially earning the “MEGA” status on Geocaching.com. They’re like giant festivals for geocachers—filled with activities, vendors, games, and plenty of opportunities to meet other players who share your passion for the hunt.
If you’ve never been to one before, here’s what you can expect:
1. A Sea of Geocachers
At a MEGA, you’ll meet hundreds (sometimes thousands) of geocachers, from beginners to legends with tens of thousands of finds. Everyone wears nametags with caching handles, making it easy to connect and strike up conversations.
2. Unique and Creative Caches
Event hosts often put out special caches just for the MEGA weekend. Expect puzzles, gadget caches, and hides that push creativity to the next level. It’s also common to see temporary lab caches exclusive to the event.
3. Swag Trading & Vendors
From trackables and coins to containers and logbooks, MEGAs are a treasure trove of geocaching gear. Vendors set up booths where you can browse new items, swap stories, and score unique event merchandise.
